Hi folks, hope everyone is enjoying this terrific spell of good weather we are having. The Cork senior hurlers bowed out of the championship on a baking hot day and atmosphere last Sunday in the Gaelic grounds in Limerick. They certainly died with their boots on, but the loss will hurt Rasper, Lauren and all involved as they know the huge effort it takes to be competing at the required level with the fine margins involved. Speaking of fine margins, have our inter county games just got too quick for one referee to handle, it is virtually impossible to see everything that is going on. When it comes to the big calls, like clear and obvious decisions relating to goals and red cards, could an extra pair of eyes with modern technology be of benefit to the referee. The traditionalists will say no, and the debate will run on but there is just too much at stake for guesswork, with communications and technology as they are today. They are three kinds of solutions (1) Those that have been used before (2) Those of which are completely new (3) Those we are still seeking.
U17 minor football League Diarmuid O’ Murchu 2-16 Aghada 2-13 We travelled to one of the nearest GAA grounds to our club across the water to Crosshaven by land and sea. Standing in Crosshaven our parish looks within touching distance, but it would not be advisable to try and make a swim for it through the shipping lanes. The two Forts of Camden and Davis, previously Fort Carlisle on either side were built to defend the mouth of Cork Harbour. There was no gun salute, but a good battle did take place on the pitch. We were minus the 4 lads who were togging out in the Celtic League final the following day yet still put up a brave performance that deserved something from the game. We started impressively with early goals, a deft pass from David Wallace found Seán O’ Callaghan through on goal and he made no mistake with a fine finish. The second came from the boot of Isaac Oosthuizen after a penetrating run and pass from Seán. We were 2-6 to 0-4 up after 20 minutes with full forward James Motherway excelling scoring 5 points 3 from placed balls and the other from substitute Cormac Walsh. The remainder of the half was all the home side as they wrestled control to lead at the short whistle 1-11 v 2-7 our 7th point was scored by James. The second half was a close affair as both sides battled for supremacy, we struck points from Seánie Call 2 as well as a real inspirational score when full back Ronan Devoy charged up the field to fire over. James hit another good point to level proceedings at 2-11 each and it was all to play for. From there until the end we did not get the rub of the green and despite some more well worked team moves finished off by David and Cormac it was the final blast of the referees whistle and not the sound of the harbours canons that brought an end to this entertaining battle. U12 football League St Finbarrs 6-8 Aghada 0-5 The trip to Togher on Sunday proved to be a fruitless one as we came up against a very good Barrs side who held all the aces. Playing in the blazing sunshine we might have been up against it but the team battled hard from the first minute until the last. Michael Creedon kicked 3 very good points and Conor O’ Neill brought off some outstanding saves, while Harry Martin who was fouled for 2 frees picked himself up to kick the resultant frees over the bar. Ben Eagle, Maidhc Collins and Ronan Callanan drove on at every opportunity against the home side who proved to be a tough nut to crack on this occasion. U14 Football Championship St Colmcilles 2-2 Aghada 2-12 Our u14 footballers got their championship campaign off to a winning start with an impressive win away to the Carraig na bhFear and Whitescross amalgamation, last Tuesday evening in Carraig na bhFear. This was a rollercoaster of a game as we reached dizzy heights at times and plummeted down before rising high again enjoying a scintillating finish. We came out all guns blazing with Shay Rooney finding Matthew Condon who rifled a powerful shot high into the net, Matthew then found the range from play before the home side conjured up their first and only point of the half that we can put down to the teak tough defending of the six backs with captain Ciarán Cashman leading by example and Seán O’ Reilly and Conor Padden in tremendous form. Our goalkeeper Cathal Lowney brought off his usual heroics with point blank spellbinding saves in either half. Points from Kaylan Cunningham as he raided up the field from wing back and Eoghan O’ Shea, Aidan Johnston, with a double from Shay all adding to our first half tally from play as we retired to the half time huddle in buoyant mood 1-6 v 0-1 in front. A calamitous start to the second half saw us hand the initiative to our opponents as they scored 2 quick fire goals and a point without reply before the rollercoaster took another twist with a few changes in personnel we took off once again. Dynamic midfielder Hugh O’ Loingsigh exchanged passes to move in on goal and he made no mistake to beat the goalkeeper with a superb finish. Eoghan was working hard drawing fouls and winning frees and we pushed on with more points from Kaylan, Shay and Robbie Oosthuizen along with impressive scores from substitutes Donncha Walsh and David Murphy to record an emphatic ten-point win in the end. The club would like to wish Jake Morrissey a speedy recovery as he missed the game due to a recent ankle injury. The prestigious Willie Ryan U12 Hurling tournament takes place this Saturday June 3rd with a start time of 1.30pm. We have 8 teams taking part including ourselves, Ballinhassig, Ballygiblin, Cloughduv, Erins Own, Killeagh, Kiltha Óg and St Catherines. With 2 Groups of 4 the final and Shield final should take place around 4.30pm. So why not head down to Rostellan where a feast of hurling awaits from these young stars of the future.
Five All Ireland Hurling Medals came back to the Parish last Saturday in a truly memorable and fantastic occasion for the club and families involved. The Celtic Hurling challenge has been hugely successful since its inception in 2016. The ethos is a development one and is named in recognition of the original Juvenile hurling club known as Celtic. The trophy won by Cork East is named in memory of John William Scott who was aged just 14 when he was shot dead in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday 21st November 1920. The competition started on the 8th of April with 38 teams taking part from 30 counties and concluded last Saturday as Cork East defeated Dublin in Birr County Offaly. Huge congratulations to Ger Sheehan selector and Players Samuel O’ Driscoll, Tomás Condon, James Hurley, and Robert Dean not only do they get to keep the now historic Celtic final jersey they are the proud owners of the John William Scott medals, a great achievement and lifetime memory not only for themselves but for their extended families and our club.
A good start for the Cork senior Footballers who won their first group game away to Louth in Navan in the All-Ireland series. In a tough group this was the perfect start as they now face into the next game against great rivals and All Ireland champions Kerry in Páirc Uí Chaoimh this Saturday and the Best of luck to all and our own Brian Walsh who is part of the backroom team.
The dream of the double ended for Scoil Ísoagáin Aghada NS in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last Tuesday in the Sciath Na Scol Hurling final. They came up against a very good Dungourney side in a terrific atmosphere on a very hot day at headquarters. Although disappointed the journey was exciting and after winning the football earlier in the season they will look back on this enjoyable year with great memories.
Hard luck to Midleton CBS who lost out in the U14 football final to Colaiste Chriost Rí on Wednesday in what was the final game of the school year. We had Shay Rooney, Kaylan Cunningham, Sam Morgan, Matthew Condon, Eoghan O’ Shea and David Murphy involved. Well done to all who represented the club in the various schools and competitions this year.
Congratulations to all from the club who were involved in the Cork Senior Ladies Footballers recent success, it’s always great to get a win over the Kingdom.
Our academy was out in force again last weekend with games at u7, u8 u9 and u10 with our u9s hosting an attractive football blitz featuring ourselves, city side Na Piarsiagh and fellow East Cork teams Erin’s Own and St. Colmans. The weather is great so get out and enjoy the sunshine wherever you may be on this June Bank holiday weekend.
Congratulations to all who competed in the Cork city sports at MTU on Thursday. A barrel load of medals came back to the parish and well done to all who took part.
