Hi folks, hope you all enjoyed the glorious sunshine of last weekend and that this is a sign of things to come, and we can all look forward to a fine summer ahead. The GAA For All got up and running last Saturday morning with lots of great fun and games being enjoyed by the children, this is a fantastic initiative and the best of luck going forward to all involved. Speaking of getting up and running the Sideline café enjoyed a terrific soft opening, with the sun shining brightly the impressive facility was the main talking point of people from near and far who were in Rostellan at the weekend, and this will be a brilliant addition to our club. The official opening will be next Friday night with the committee hoping to be able to post a list of the official opening times for the café shortly. Once upon a time man thought the world was flat and what would happen when we got to the edge, only to find out the world was round, we should never be afraid to take that extra step.

Aghada 6- 14 Erin’s Own 3-14 after extra time

After 2 hours of hurling, we finally got the better of a gallant Erin’s Own side in a cracking contest played in our quarry field last Friday night. Adam Lewis was the star of the show playing in goals in the first half he was relocated to corner forward where he showed a real poachers instinct finding the net on four occasions in a remarkable show of clinical finishing. In the end it was a resounding victory as the team produced a performance brimful of commitment and resolve that was also not without its anxious moments when the game was in the melting pot. The opening score of the game came courtesy of ace free taker Tom Walsh who got us off the mark with a pair of excellent frees and the hard-working Sam McAllister found the net with a speculative strike before Erin’s Own hit back to lead by 2 points at the break 1-5 to 1-7 their goal came from a good follow up after Adam Lewis had made a smart save from the initial shot. We started to get a grip on the game in the second half with substitutes Jake Hegarty and Matthew Condon making an impact and reserve goalkeeper John Dorney using his booming puckouts to good effect, a superb Jack Dorney goal after he was put through by Sam and quality points from Jack D, Tom and the majestic Jack Mulcahy had us in the driving seat 3 points up entering injury time, however Erin’s Own clawed their way back into it and levelled the game in the 39th minute 2-9 to 1-12 to force extra time. We knew we would need something special to get us over the line as our opponents fought hard for every ball and we found it in the scoring prowess of Adam Lewis when he connected beautifully to flick home an outrageous goal it lifted our boys as points from Jack M, Tom and Sam had us leading 3-12 to 1-12 after the first period of added time. Adam hit the net 3 more times in an exhibition of goalscoring as we took complete control of the game with the defense excelling and points from Sam and a wonderful Mathew Condon effort saw us home on a winning score of 6-14 to 3-14. On a sour note, we lost influential half back Sam Douglas to injury and we wish him well in his recovery.

Our U13 hurlers came out on top in a real searching test of their credentials against a top Cobh team in a competitive encounter in Rostellan last Saturday afternoon. Played in blazing sunshine the game sizzled from start to finish. Sam Morgan was a tower of strength at full back with Conor Charles and Donncha Walsh bossing the midfield, we struck 3 well worked first half goals from David Murphy, Matthew Condon and John Dorney and it was evident our forwards were working hard for the team, and they needed to be as Cobh threatened on many occasions. Dara O’ Brien was proving deadly accurate from the placed ball as we arrived at the interval 2 points ahead 3-4 to 2-5. Both sides found scores harder to come by as the heat began to take its toll in the second half, nonetheless the competitive nature of the game never yielded. John Dorney put away his 2nd goal and Dara hit another point, but the real match winning moment came from our goalkeeper Rian O’ Brien Higgins who somehow caught a rasping close in shot with just 2 minutes left on the clock that drew gasps of admiration from all in attendance. Final score 4-5 to 2-7.

The annual Billy Ahern U12 tournament takes place on the bank holiday Monday next June 6th where a feast of football awaits with 8 teams participating. The teams are Aghada, Carrigaline, Cobh, Fr O’ Neill’s, Glenville, Killeagh Itas, Kinsale and Lisgoold with the first games starting at 10am so why not head down to Rostellan and support the lads as they honour the memory of our former star player Billy.

The club was well represented at the Thomas Kent annual commemoration last Saturday. Our former star full back Aiden Power originally from Lower Aghada but now domiciled in Strandhill Sligo was on hand to lay the wreath for the founding president of our club Denis Kelly. Juvenile player Seán Walsh was the flag bearer as former hurling goalkeeper Pa O’ Riordan raised the tricolor. Maurice Rice and Tommy Foley also laid wreaths while our president John T Motherway sang the national anthem. Well done to the organizers for the well run and very well attended event.

Scartleigh National school, Saleen are going to be playing hurling and camogie Sciath na Scol finals on Friday 10th June a fantastic occasion for the school and the best of luck to all involved.

The best of luck to Cormac O’ Keeffe who plays in the IMART rugby world cup tournament for Sundays Well in Cork next weekend from June 5th to June 10th a brilliant achievement for Cormac in what will be a memorable occasion for him and his family. Go for it Cormac and enjoy the experience.
