East Cork A U21 hurling Champ – Semi Final – Aghada 3-14 v Carrigtwohill 1-17; Carrigtwohill–18/10/2019

With 10 minutes gone in this clash last Friday night, Carrigtwohill led 6 points to 1 and appeared to be cruising being that they were on top in most if not every line of the field. The Aghada point came from Jamie O’Hanlon who took a fine pass from Mark McCarthy, dummied well and pointed on the run. Other than that Aghada have few highlights, but now Aghada started to get to grips with Carrigtwohill. With Ben Stafford playing well at the back along with Jordan Tynan and Mark Mc, Charlie Terry now came to the fore. He hit 4 points from the 14th to the 20th minutes. 3 were frees, 2 of which Charlie earned himself. Suddenly the gap was down to a single point, but this seemed to awaken Carrig once more. They goaled on the 21st minute and pointed 2 minutes later to restore their lead in the blink of an eye, and in truth looked like they might have an extra gear over Aghada. The next score was hugely significant. A ruck developed, with Aaron Berry eventually emerging with possession. He released Jamie, who buried it low to the ‘keepers left. Marcus Leahy earned a free minutes later, Cha converted again. Darragh Ryan hit a super point from the middle of the field, while Carrig also had 2 more points before the short whistle to send the home side in at half time with a 2 point lead. Strangely though it felt like Aghada were happier at half time and you could see the belief growing. A much more even 2nd half saw the sides exchange 4 points each in the opening 18 minutes or so. And then came another huge score. Excellent defending at the back saw the ball make its way to Jamie, who after soloing up the right wing, flashed the ball across the square. Substitute Conor O’Keeffe controlled with one touch and buried with his next. And now Aghada led for the 1st time in the game. Not for long as our opponents pointed a free on 20 minutes. But then came Aghada’s third goal. O’Keefee and Hanlon reversed roles, O’Keeffe suppling Hanlon, and from a difficult angle going away from goals he scored a superb goal low across the keeper. Carrigtwohill came again. 3 frees in as many minutes drew them level again and with 5 minutes to go, it was truly in the melting pot. Aghada powered home to the finish line however. Terry hit a fine score from play, before Matt Leahy won a free which Terry duly converted. Charlie hit his 9th and final point of the night from another free on 29 minutes and with the defence holding firm, Kyle O’Shea and Rory Slye prominant, Aghada held on for a brilliant victory. Next up is East Cork final, opponents unknown as of yet.

Well Done Imokilly

Massive congratulations to Imokilly who completed an historic 3 in a row of county senior hurling titles yesterday. Proud moment for all involved and a proud moment for our club to have Fergal “Rasper” Condon in charge for all 3 title victories. We also had 3 players involved – Will Leahy (who has won all three titles), Mike Russell and Mark McCarthy. Also on the management backroom team for the last 3 years are Oisin Counihan and Jack Norris on stats and Dr. Diarmuid Mulcahy, medical.
