East Cork Harbour Marathon Launch

A large crowd gathered in our grounds in Rostellan on Sunday June the 10th from where the 2018 East Cork Harbour Marathon was officially launched. Corks 96fm were also on site to add some glamour to the occassion . A Volcano Wood-fired Pizza oven was dishing out free pizzas and food to everyone in attendance. All attention now focuses in on August 11th when the races will take place. On the day, a 10k run/walk, a half marathon and a full marathon will all take place, so another huge day is in store for our community. If you intend to run/walk you should register fast as places are very limited at this point. Best of luck to all involved.

Premier Intermediate Hurling Results

A bit of a pick n mix for our hurlers over the last couple weeks, with one of each being the outcomes – one win, one draw, and one loss.

First up we played St Catherines in the Abernethy Cup on Wednesday the 6th of June. Could we count this as two wins? A bit of controversy here as when the final whistle blew, most observers had Aghada winning by two points. However, the man the matters most, the referee had it as a draw and so extra time had to be played. Aghada kicked on big time in extra time and with Charlie Terry and Stevie Keeffe to the fore, Aghada hit a very impressive hit 1-11 in the extra time period to run out comfortable winners on a 2-26 v 1-21 scoreline. Next up in this tournament will be either Fr. O’Neills or Cloyne.

Aghada Team and Scorers – Trevor O’Keeffe, Tim Hartnett, Jake O’Donoghue, David Rice, Billy Hennessy (0-2), Jordan Tynan, Aiden O’Connell, Stephen O’Keeffe(0-1), Aaron Stafford (0-7, 3f), Daniel Creedon (0-2), Pearse O’Neill (1-2), Kalen O’Donoghue(0-2), Brian Morrissey(0-2), Michael Russell(0-1,’65), Kevin O’Hanlon(1-2). Subs Used Charlie Terry(0-5), Aaron Berry.

The following Saturday, the squad travelled to Ballyanley to play Inniscarra in the next round of the Division 2 league. The 1st half was a very low scoring affair, with Aghada leading by 5 points to 3 at the interval, thanks to 5 placed balls, 4 from Aaron Stafford and one from Stevie Keeffe. Aghada dominated the opening exchanges of the second half and with 10 minutes to play had what looked like a comfortable lead of 12 points to 5. Credit to the home side, who battled right to the end, and in the closing stages they hit 1-4 without reply to snatch a draw and both teams left with a share of the spoils.

Aghada Team and scorers – Trevor O’Keeffe, Richie Condon, Jake O’Donoghue, Timmy Hartnett, Aiden O’Connell, Michael Russell, Jordan Tynan(0-1), Stephen O’Keeffe(0-2, 1’65), Aaron Berry, Luke O’Connell, Charlie Terry(0-3,1f), Kalen O’Donoghue, Kevin O’Hanlon(0-1), Daniel Creedon, Aaron Stafford(0-4, 4f’s). Subs Used Matt Leahy(0-1), Ger Lynch.

Next up for our hurlers was a rematch against Eire Og, which brought back recent memories of our historic County title win from last year. Right from the off it was clear the men from Ovens were thinking of that night also, and this was a league game with a bit more bite to it than usual. Aghada played with the aid of a very strong wind in the 1st half and were 1st on the scoreboard after Charlie Terry pointed from out on the right hand sideline. By the time Charlie hit his second point 15 minutes later, Aghada were in a very comfortable 7 points to no score lead. In between we had points from Cian Fleming (2), Mathew Leahy, Kalen O’Donoghue and a monster free from Stephen O’Keeffe which bounced over the Eire Og bar after been struck from inside his own ’45. A ’65 in the 25th minute was Eire Og’s first score, but this was quickly cancelled out by a Daniel Creedon point after a strong run from midfield from Jack McDonald. Now though Eire Og finally found their feet and hit some vital scores before the short whistle. 2 frees and one from play gave them a 4 point total at the break. Fleming pointed a free in reply to leave Aghada on 9 points and the home side were also grateful for an outstanding Trevor O’Keeffe save in the Aghada goal on the stroke of halftime.

The measure of the wind was that the 5 point lead was wiped out in 5 minutes after the restart. 2 frees and a goal from play levelled the game and it looked like a big ask for Aghada from here. The second half was a stop start affair with a number of niggly incidents and stand offs. In truth this probably suited the team playing against the wind and Aghada rallied to hit the next three points – all frees from Fleming. A free on 19 minutes left the Aghada lead at two points, but Eire Og were down to 14 and the scoring threat of the opening 5 minutes had been closed off by a solid Aghada rearguard. Charlie Terry made it a 3 point game with three minutes of normal time remaining, but an Eire Og free brought it back to that dangerous 2 point game again. Still despite the wind Aghada looked like holding out and did so comfortably until virtually the last puck of the game, when with their last attack, Eire Og manufactured a goal chance which was brilliantly finished to the roof of the Aghada net. 2-8 v 0-13 it finished, and while it wasn’t a great performance, Aghada can still feel unlucky to lose in the manner they  did.

Aghada Team and scorers – Trevor O’Keefe, David Rice, Jake O’Donoghue, Timmy Hartnett, Billy Hennessy, Stephen O’Keeffe(0-1’f), Shane Wall, Aiden O’Connell, Jack McDonald, Cian Fleming(0-6,f’s), Brian Morrissey, Kalen O’Donoghue(0-1), Daniel Creedon(0-1), Charlie Terry(0-3), Mathew Leahy(0-1). Subs Used Luke O’Connell, Richie Condon.
