  •  Rebel Óg East U16 Div1 Football League   22/04/24               Aghada 2-10 Midleton 3-12                                  report By Mark White
  • A game of two halves unfolded in an enthralling match in Rostellan.  Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half, Aghada dominated play, with an excellent opening goal from Cian Moore who palmed in the ball following a sweeping move from the back line.  Another team effort saw Jack Mulcahy finishing with a piercing shot to the keepers right.  Our defence had to work hard to keep Midleton at bay, with Kaylan Cunningham excelling in the opening minutes.  A surging Midleton attack had goalkeeper Matthew Condon pull off a brilliant double save to deny Midleton a goal. The Aghada defence repulsed most Midleton attacks, with aggressive tackling Jamie Sweeney denying Midleton on a number of occasions.  Midleton were restricted to long range speculative shots. Ciaran Cashman won an excellent high ball and his quick release of the ball led to another sweeping move and resulted in a fantastic Shay Rooney point from out near the touchline, followed by a Cian Moore point after yet another passing move. Midleton finished the half strongly, with a series of huge tackles from Eoghan Walsh denying Midleton before the break. 2-3 to 6 at half time to the lads in green.                                     The 2nd half started brightly for Aghada with another Cian Moore point after a distracting run from Jack Mulcahy sucked in the Midleton defence.  Aghada put the Midleton kick out under enormous pressure, with a crowded defence preventing a third goal for Aghada after a scrambled clearance. Midleton responded well, with their big number 8 driving through the Aghada centre and a great dummy sent Matthew the wrong way.  The goal energised Midleton.  Aghada stayed the course with some great points from Cian, a fantastic block from Sam McAllister, and some heroics from Will O’ Mahony on the left side of defence. A Kaylan interception resulted in another Aghada point. At this stage Midleton became dominant, and the introduction of Peter Mulcahy in attack and the speedy Sean O’Reilly in defence couldn’t stop Midleton closing the game strongly.  Final score Aghada 2-10 Midleton 3-12.

It is hard to believe this is only their second game of the year with May approaching. With no game for seven weeks, a slow start could have been expected but the opposite is what transpired. Within a minute, James Hurley had a point on the board with a well taken score after a lovey kick pass from Sean O’Callaghan. Our lads pushed hard for the opening quarter and great team play ensured we raced into a nine point lead with two well taken goals from Andrew Murphy. Kiltha were starting to grow into the game but then one of their midfielders got a black card. It would be expected that we would push on from here but it was the men from Dungourney/Castlemartyr who riffled 2-1 over without reply to leave us two up at the short whistle. All of a sudden, the Kiltha boys had all the momentum.  To our lads credit, they responded very well. A super goal from Dara O’Conchubhair and a cool finish to the back of the net from Cormac Walsh restored our healthy lead and we looked out of sight. Just as this game looked like it was moving towards its conclusion, Kiltha came back at us again. A quick free ended up in our net and the Kiltha free taker nailed some fantastic long range scores off the ground to leave our lead at the minimum entering injury time. We needed another score and that’s exactly what we got. Great team play from Colm White, Isaac Oosthuizen and a great Andrew Murphy run ended with young Cian Moore blasting an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the net to put up four up again. Surely this was game over with the clock in the red… it was not. There was one more sting in the tail as Kiltha struck for another late goal but the full time whistle sounded soon after to leave us with a full time score of 5-9 to 5-8. A cracker of a game with some fantastic play from both teams. Best on the night for Aghada were Colm White, Ronan Devoy, Andrew Murphy, Cormac Walsh and Captain on the night James O’Donnell who covered every blade of grass on the pitch. Best wishes to Tomás Condon and Samuel O’Driscoll who are currently recovering from injuries. The lads now play Midleton in the hurling league next Wednesday! Another huge game!!!                                                                                          Team & Scorers : Seán Corkery, Colm White, Conor Bakx, Éanna Crowley, James O’ Donnell (0-02), Ronan Devoy, Dara O’ Conchubhair (1-0), David Wallace, Seán O’ Callaghan, Andrew Murphy (2-02), Robert Dean, Isaac Oosthuizen, James Hurley (0-02), Tom Walsh (0-01), Cormac Walsh (1-02). On a cold and rain swept April evening, Aghada got off to a great start, Cian Moore winning a ball in midfield and after some crisp, short passing, Tom Walsh pointed.  This was followed by a point from Jack Mulcahy following another series of short accurate passes.  Aghada were rewarded for this period of dominance with the first goal scored by Tom Walsh, after a great long range pass from Josh McCarthy which Shay Rooney ran onto and gave a defence splitting pass for Tom’s goal.  Aghada’s second goal came from Matthew Condon after an intercepted Bride Rovers puck out. Bride Rovers struggled to score but didn’t stop competing for every ball. Aghada scored from a couple of frees, before Tom broke through the defence to lob the keeper for Aghada’s 3rd goal. Bride Rovers began to claw their way back into the game, dominating for the early part of the second half.  Aghada’s defence stood firm, and some excellent team defending kept Aghada’s advantage, typified by Eoghan Walsh’s run from supporting the forwards to get back to cover the goal from midfield and snuff out a dangerous Bride Rovers attack.  Aghada’s keeper John Dorney was also called upon and blocked a goal bound free before Aghada scrambled the sliothar clear. Substitute Cillian Burke also rippled the Bride Rovers note, despite the attentions of the Bride Rovers defender who almost came away with Cillian’s jersey.  Aghada maintained some distance from Bride Rovers on the scoreline, but had to engage in some frantic defending in the closing stages, with substitute Rossa White’s diving block typical of the hard work being put in by the back 6. Goals win games, and was the case from this great team effort from the lads in conditions reminiscent of November rather than the start of summer, and a great win in a close fought physical game. Final score 4-10 to 0-11
